Capstone Project

This capstone project occurred during my last semester as an Arts and Technology student at the University of Texas at Dallas.

It is about a world of humans and spirits and is illustrated through a collection of digitally-painted concept art. It explores the harmonious relationship between the two and how their symbiotic relationships consist of a mutual cycle of giving and taking.

Rei

Created by the life force of a forest, Rei serves as its guardian. She fosters the health of all flora and fauna by praying at shrines within the forest daily, raising the surrounding areas’ spiritual harmony.

As a counter to physical threats, Rei defends her home using the forest’s life force as a source of her magic, but she must be careful not to overuse this power, as the forest’s wellbeing reflects directly upon her own and vice versa. If defeated, she can be reborn, however, this typically takes decades if not centuries depending on the state of the biome and how taxing it is to recreate her.

Although Rei’s kind is known to be altruistic and sympathetic, they are very hesitant to leave the forest they protect. Should outsiders need her help, they’d best have a compelling reason.

Haku

Haku is a traveling warrior from a small, sacred village graced with the heightened presence of the moon spirit. The village’s belief system is a focused sect on the moon and its relationship with water. Haku is one of eight warriors who each represent a major phase of the moon cycle—her phase is the new moon.

She and her fellow warriors have been entrusted with a mission by the village elders to balance the relationship of the moon spirit with humans abroad; a mission prompted by recent, sporadic floods and severe droughts across the continent. As Haku travels, she teaches those around her on how to pay respect to the moon spirit and establish the lost balance.

Honored to be entrusted with her mission, she travels far and wide—determined to return home victorious with her good deeds.

Kenta

Originally a misplaced orphan of a disgraced family, Kenta escaped this life by running away and stumbling upon a remote village in the mountains. Here, Kenta was taught the forbidden ability to fuse with a fire spirit given to him by a close childhood friend in his last moments before perishing. Although illegal, Kenta is among the few who were trained by those who pass down this practice.

Now a lone-wolf traveler and outcast, he channels the fire spirit through a blade with a will of its own.  By pricking his finger on the end of the sword daily to maintain their contract, the spirit obeys him. This sword has the ability to morph itself to Kenta’s needs, be it dual blades, greatsword, shortsword, etc, however, Kenta prefers to keep it as a greatsword.

Elior Key Pose.jpg

Elior

Elior is a prince from a long line of royalty with the ability to control and convert solar energy into tangible objects (i.e. armor, weapons, etc). Elior’s specialty lies in crafting armor, wearable on himself as well as others. In addition to concentrating solar energy, he can also disperse it—radiating the energy outward.

Young and talented, Elior takes his powers for granted and it fuels his arrogance.

Due to his elitist upbringing, he doesn’t take well to orders nor does he mesh amiably in teams. Elior is hard to converse with and can come off as condescending, even to those he may consider as peers.
